Shockwave Therapy

Benefits of Shockwave Therapy

At South Coast Sports Podiatry, we are committed to discovering new podiatry treatment options that will aid our patients’ through their recovery process in the fastest, most adequate, and pain-free way. For this reason, we introduced TGA-approved shockwave therapy as a non-intrusive but resultful solution – it is intended to “motivate” your body to heal itself, eventually reducing pain and improving your mobility. This is used in conjunction with a personalized conditioning regime to get you back on your feet sooner!

If you believe that shockwave therapy can help you in treating your condition or you need more information on the subject, contact us.

Shockwave treatment.

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) or, plainly, Shockwave therapy, is a commonly used treatment modality in orthopaedics and sports medicine. It represents a non-invasive treatment which utilises acoustic waves produced by a handheld applicator and delivers them into areas of the body where you might be experiencing pain and inflammation that may be chronic or acute in nature.

The therapy has proven to be highly effective in the treatment of chronic conditions, such as pain and discomfort that stems from a lingering injury and illness. In certain cases, the relief and improvements can be felt after just one treatment, but it may take several shockwave therapy treatments to achieve the goals we set for you.

Shockwave therapy works on a number of biophysical and biochemical pathways to help start regenerative and reparative processes in bones, tendons and other soft tissues.

These processes cause:

  • New micro-blood vessel formation (angioneogensis) in and around the injured area.
  • The reversal of the inflammatory process via the release of mast cells, chemokines and cytokines.
  • The stimulation of collagen production in injured tendons and ligaments.
  • The dissolution of calcium build-ups in soft tissue, which is then reabsorbed into the body.
  • Reduction of “Substance-P”, a neurotransmitter that mediates pain and inflammation in the body.
  • The release of trigger points within the muscles fibres.

We approach each patient individually, customise their treatment plan, and decide on the number of therapies based on the severity of their issue and a multitude of other factors.

At our clinic, we perform an TGA-approved shockwave therapy for patellar, achilles and hamstring tendonitis and a range of other conditions which result in chronic pain. To achieve the best results, we rely on cutting-edge equipment.
